Flow measurements in biogas plants
Flow measurements in biogas plants
Biogas plants use anaerobic digestion to recover organic matter and convert it into biogas. When biogas is burned in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, it can be used to generate electricity and heat for engines, microturbines, and fuel cells.
Biogas can also be converted to biomethane. Biomethane is produced by upgrading biogas by removing unwanted gas components, mainly carbon dioxide, from the raw biogas. The biomethane, which is chemically identical to natural gas, can be easily injected into the natural gas grid.
Reliable flow measurements in biogas plants can more accurately determine the ratio of the substrate used to the electrical and thermal energy produced. This can optimize the feed-in, thereby increasing the efficiency of the biogas plant and having a direct impact on the operating result. Various physical measurement principles can be used to record the gas volume.
Flow measurements in biogas plants are usually transmitted remotely via a bus protocol such as HART or Profibus.
Due to the increased plant sizes, but also due to legal requirements, the demands on the plants are increasing. Trouble-free and automated technical processes therefore have a direct impact on the quality of work and the working hours of the operator. The goal is to keep the degree of utilization and plant availability at the highest possible level.
Measurement technology from ACS Control-System can make an important contribution. With over two decades of experience in the fields of level, pressure, temperature and flow measurement technology, we can also offer a suitable measurement and automation package for your plant.

Application
For flow measurement from pre-pit to digester and for general flow measurement of slurry and substrate the FLOWCONT FN is suitable in the biogas plant.
Operating principle
The FLOWCONT FN flowmeter operates according to the magnetic inductive measuring principle.
A magnetic field is generated in the measuring tube of the flow meter and the voltage of the electrically conductive liquid is measured via electrodes.
The output signals are the flow velocity in the pipe as an analog output (4…20mA) and the flow rate as pulses (l / hl / m3).
